East of Scotland: Welfare keep up pressure

Whitehill Welfare proved that they could still challenge leaders Spartans for the Central Taxis Premier Division title when a late 20-yard strike from attacking midfield player Jordan Hall earned them a 1-0 victory over Edinburgh University.

Edinburgh City netted a stoppage-time winner when Peter Stenhouse grabbed his second goal to ensure a 3-2 win against Stirling University. Robbie Ross converted a penalty before Jason Atkins and Liam Corr put the students ahead. Tynecastle moved to mid-table with a 4-2 win against Heriot-Watt University. John Williams, Darren Aird, Wayne McIntosh and Darren Thomson scored, while Aaron James and Ronnie Napier responded.

Preston Athletic remain second-bottom after their 5-2 defeat by Lothian Thistle. Craig Stewart, Mark Kelly(2), Omar Ali and a Matt Costello own goal counted for Thistle while Marc Lothian and Mark Pagliarulo netted for Preston. Leith Athletic beat Kelso United 4-0, Gala Fairydean beat Berwick Rangers Reserves 2-1 and Peebles Rovers were 2-0 victors over Easthouses Lily.
