East of Scotland: Spartans make most of cup bye to top league

Spartans, who were not involved in Scottish Cup duty because they received a bye to the second round, moved into top spot in the Central Taxis Premier Division with a 3-0 victory against Heriot Watt University.

Their three goals were netted late by Jack Beesley, Keith McLeod and Ross Archibald. In the quarter-finals of the Alex Jack Cup, Stirling University required extra-time to beat Leith Athletic 3-2 with two goals from Scott Tully while Mike Pentland notched the winner. Darren Lavery and Martin McAuley scored for Leith. Lothian Thistle advanced with a 1-0 win against Ormiston thanks to a Charles McAleavy goal while Tynecastle overcame Peebles 3-0 with strikes from Robbie Arthur (2) and Wayne McIntosh. Gretna 2008 beat Easthouses Lily 2-1. In the Central Taxis First Division, Berwick Rangers Reserves had a 3-1 win over Craigroyston, whose manager Jamie Burrell resigned immediately after the game. In the only other game, Eyemouth United drew 1-1 with Kelso United.
