Dundee HSFP 92 - 7 West of Scotland: Writing on the wall for West from the off

The writing was on the wall almost immediately for West at sunny Mayfield when their pack were marched back 40 metres in a maul from their first attacking lineout, and Dundee barely relented for the remaining 78 minutes as they ran up their record Premier One score to confirm their top eight place a week before the split.

The Taysiders had 14 tries in all as they dominated the set piece and sliced open the West defence almost at will with Premier One's top try-scorer James Fleming bagging four of them as well as converting eight.

Fleming finished the move from that devastating first maul, added his second try soon afterwards, and should have had a third inside 20 minutes when he slipped and fell with the line open, Matt Smith finishing it off to complete the bonus point.

The third try came from a penalty award as the Dundee scrum forced three infringements on West's line and it was better than a point a minute when Smith went in for his second on the half hour.

West held the score at 40-0 until the half and even got a try themselves early in the second period through Michael Sim, but that was a mere moment's respite from the one-way traffic. The deluge continued with eight more tries, including a hat-trick for Glasgow pro Peter Murchie, and two more from the fleet Fleming, taking his season's haul to 15 with the halfway point of the season still a week away.
