Dundee HSFP 52 - 14 Selkirk: Dundee unleash attack after 18 minutes

With three Glasgow pros in their backline, the wonder was why it took free-scoring Dundee as long as 18 minutes to open their account as they hosted a depleted Selkirk, but once they did the rout ensued.

A late call-off had Ian Rankin adding Rob Dewey to a back division already containing Peter Murchie and Peter Horne, as well as Scotland's top try-scorer James Fleming, while Selkirk were missing five backs to injury.

Murchie finished off a simple move for the try to break the Borderers' early defiance, and the home side had their customary try bonus point wrapped up within the next quarter hour.

Richie Hawkins, Rick McKenna and Simon Forrest all went over in swift order for Dundee, with Horne converting three.

Selkirk had their own pro for the day in Edinburgh's Stevie Turnbull and he led a fightback that produced a two tries for Fraser Harkness and resulted in sin-binnings for Forrest for fisticuffs and Andy Linton for persistent offside.

But even two men to the good and with their never-say-die attitude, Selkirk had little answer to the speed and power of Dundee, with Danny Levison and inveitably Fleming adding further scores.

The highlight for the home fans, however was skipper Hawkins completing a rare hat-trick. The lock sprinted in from halfway after a breakout from Levison and then did it again, jinking past defenders from similar range to take his side over the half-century mark.
