Dunbar ready for a football extravaganza

THE best youth football teams in the Lothians will this weekend go head-to-head to determine the champions of the prestigious South East Region Cup at all age groups.

Finalists at all seven levels between under-13 and under-21 will descend on Dunbar's Hallhill ground for a two-day festival of football that promises to showcase some of the finest young sporting talent from in and around Edinburgh.

First up tomorrow at midday is the under-17 final between Falkirk side Syngenta and West Lothian outfit Blackridge Thistle, before old Capital foes Leith Athletic and Edinburgh United clash in the under-19 showpiece.

A Syngenta outfit are represented once more in the under-21 final later tomorrow and are again pitched against West Lothian opposition, this time facing Murieston United.

The seven-game series recommences on Sunday with a tantalising under-13 tie between Fords Road club Hutchison Vale and Inverkeithing side Hillfield Swifts, before a trio of all-Edinburgh clashes rounds off the weekend.

Edina Hibs and Tynecastle contest a mouthwatering under-14 head-to-head, where Tynie, the current Scottish Cup holders, will be out for revenge over their Division 1 rivals following a Willie Bauld Cup final defeat to Edina at Tynecastle Stadium last week earlier this month. Both sides have drawn one and lost none in their league campaigns this year, and Edina will be in search of their third piece of silverware of the season – and their second in five days after Wednesday's Bill Sheridan Cup win over Spartans.

A battle of the black-and-whites follows as Leith Athletic and Edinburgh City play off for the under-15 crown. Leith and their manager Mark Muirhead, who has decided to leave the club at the end of the season, will be looking to replicate their result in the recent Federation of Hearts Supporters Clubs Cup final where they beat Musselburgh Windsor. City, meanwhile, will look to their day in the sun as a pick-me-up from the disappointment of missing out on any other silverware this year. The final fixture sees Tynecastle up against league adversaries Bonnyrigg Rose in the under-16 competition.
