Dumfries trio fly flag

Three teenagers from the same Scottish club - Dumfries & County - have all qualified for the knock-out stages of the Boys Amateur Championship in Somerset. And what is even more amazing is that they have each posted the same 36-hole aggregate of 149-seven over par.

Daniel McConnachie, Greig Marchbank and Liam Johnston will now turn their attention to match-play golf over the superb Burnham and Berrow links.

McConnachie matched the par of 71 at Enmore Park on Tuesday and went round the tougher Burnham layout in 78 yesterday while Marchbank followed his 73 at Enmore with a 76 at Burnham and Johnston had rounds of 75 and 74.

Marchbank suffered a triple bogey-7 on the 438-yard 11th, but did not allow that to unsettle him too much and he had a string of pars before finishing with a bogey.

Johnston had two birdies in the last three holes to complete an inward half score of 35 for a highly creditable 74 at Burnham.

"I was certainly relieved to finish strongly because I knew I would be near the cut point," said Johnston.

"It is quite remarkable that three members of the same club have qualified. We are obviously all delighted," said McConnachie.

Alva's Lawrence Allan also made progress into the match-play phase with a 150 total.

There were some notable casualties including Scottish stroke-play champion Joshua Jamieson from the New Club, St Andrews who crashed to a 83 .
