Dual role for Ferguson as Cobras head for London

LISA Ferguson will double up in the 60 metres and the long jump as Glasgow Cobras compete in the McCain City Challenge this weekend.

The side, which can be picked from all over Scotland under the tournament rules, head for London for the second and final match after finishing fourth out of eight teams in Sheffield four weeks ago.

Edinburgh AC athlete Ferguson recently went beyond six metres in the long jump and she has been named for two events in the team selected by Glasgow Cobras management duo Brian Donaldson and Sean Watson.

Stornoway’s Donald MacLeod is selected for the 800 metres in the men’s lineup after his good performance recently in the National Senior Indoor event at the Kelvin Hall.

Chris Baillie, Dave Smith and Jax Thoirs add strength in their events, but a couple of selections remain to be confirmed over the next couple of days.

Thoirs, however, has something of an issue ahead of the fixture at Lee Valley in London. UK Athletics had booked flights for the Glasgow Cobras squad for the weekend but made no provision to transport the Victoria Park-Glasgow athlete’s poles.

As he equalled his own Scottish Junior pole vault indoor record at the British Universities championships last weekend, the 18-year-old had to make alternative arrangements for a rival to kindly ferry his poles to Lee Valley later this week.
