Diving: Waterfield on a platform of his own in Sheffield

Peter Waterfield comfortably won the men's 10 metre platform at the British Gas Diving Championships in the absence of world champion Tom Daley.

Waterfield, 29, upset Daley to win the national title in February, but was denied the chance to compete against his younger rival at the weekend after the teenager withdrew with a back injury on the eve of the event in Sheffield.

Without the competition of Daley, Waterfield did enough to ease to victory with a score of 472.50 that also ensured he reached the qualifying mark for the Commonwealth Games in October.

Blake Aldridge, who partnered Daley in the men's 10m synchro at the Beijing Olympics, was 48.9 points further back in second with Max Brick third. "It was disappointing that Tom was unable to dive, I enjoy having his competition but I did enough," Waterfield said.

"Tom would have pushed me a little bit but the other guys did give me good competition."
