Diving: Games gong for Capital diver Reid

Edinburgh diving starlet Grace Reid has capped a fine year by being named the Junior Sportsperson of the Year by Commonwealth Games Scotland (CGS).

Fourteen-year-old Reid was handed the accolade at the recent sports award dinner in Glasgow following a 2010 that has seen her compete at the Commonwealth Games and win a silver medal at the European Junior Championships.

In Delhi she was the youngest member of the Scottish team and finished sixth in the three-metre springboard event. In doing so she broke her personal best by over 30 points and became the first British junior to score over 300 points.

Just prior to the trip to India she proved that she was certainly ready to compete at that level with fourth place in the same event at the European Senior Championships.

The George Watson's College pupil is currently ranked No 1 junior in Britain at both the three-metre and one-metre springboard. And with Reid winning, it was another boost for the Edinburgh Diving Club whose coach Vicki Tomlinson was named Coach of the Year at the Edinburgh Sports Awards in October.

At the CGS dinner Reid pipped four other young talents to the prize. As well as tennis player Jonathon O'Mara and triathalete David McNamee, the shortlist included two others from the Capital - swimmer Craig McNally and fencer Lisa McKenzie.
