Diving: Daly eclipsed by Waterfield

Peter Waterfield got the better of world diving champion Tom Daley to win the final of the men's 10 metre platform on the closing day of the British Gas National Cup in Southend.

The duo, winners of the 10m synchro, set aside their friendship in an enthralling duel which ebbed and flowed before Waterfield secured the win on his penultimate dive.

The Southampton diver, the Olympic silver medallist in the 10m synchro in 2004, came up trumps with a reverse three and a half somersaults tucked, scoring three 10s to all but put the contest beyond Daley.

Waterfield still needed to hold his nerve on his final dive, but got the job done with a score of 91.80 points for his back two and a half somersaults, two and a half twists piked to win gold with a total of 494.25.

"Last year I won this title off the back of an injury-ridden year but now I have come here off a strong year and retained my title which is great," Waterfield said.

"I have felt strong and over the moon with that win.
