Deflection lifts Wolves away from drop zone

WOLVES put some distance between themselves and the bottom three in the Barclays Premier League with a 2-1 win at struggling Burnley.

Matt Jarvis fired the visitors ahead after latching on to a poor back-pass from Tyrone Mears. Clarets striker David Nugent saw his close-range effort bounce up on to the top of the crossbar, and Burnley's luck was out again when Clarke Carlisle deflected Adlene Guedioura's shot into his own net at the start of the second half.

Former Rangers striker Steven Thompson set up a grandstand finish with a goal for the hosts in the 73rd minute, but Wolves held on.

Arsenal appeared headed for a draw at Hull after Jimmy Bullard converted a penalty for the home side following a foul by Sol Campbell on Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink. The spot-kick cancelled out Andrey Arshavin's early strike for Arsenal.

But Nicklas Bendtner netted the winner after Hull goalkeeper Boaz Myhill had failed to hold a shot from Denilson.

Tottenham maintained hopes of a top-four finish as they defeated Blackburn Rovers 3-1 at White Hart Lane. Roman Pavlyuchenko netted a second-half brace after Jermain Defoe had put the hosts ahead. Chris Samba pulled a goal back.

Bolton continued their resurgence under Owen Coyle as Wigan were thumped 4-0 at the Reebok Stadium. Swede Johan Elmander put the Trotters ahead, then Kevin Davies converted a penalty after Gary Caldwell had fouled Tamir Cohen. Fabrice Muamba and Matthew Taylor put the seal on a third win in four.

Birmingham fought back from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 against in-form Everton at St Andrews. Goals from Victor Anichebe and Ayegbeni Yakubu put the visitors well in charge, but Alex McLeish's men got themselves back in the match through Cameron Jerome before Craig Gardner secured a share of the spoils.

Stoke and Aston Villa played out a goalless draw at the Britannia Stadium, where chances were few and far between.
