Death of Svein Mathisen, 58

Former Hibs player Svein Mathisen has died following an 18-month battle with stomach cancer. He was 58.

The Norwegian internationalist, and his countryman Isaac Refvik, became a cause clbre when they arrived at Easter Road in 1978, chairman Tom Hart fighting a battle with the Department of Employment over its refusal to grant the pair work permits.

However, Mathisen played only two games for Hibs and, other than his short spell in Edinburgh, he spent his entire career with IK Start, playing a record 327 matches, scoring 106 goals and winning 25 caps for Norway.
