Deadlock gives Scots uphill struggle over Heineken Cup

Scotland, along with other Celtic nations, are today facing an escalating battle to secure the future of the Heineken European rugby cup after the latest talks brought no promise of a breakthrough. English and French clubs have refused to sign an accord that would see their participation after next 
season and want a reduction in the number of automatic entries from the Pro 12 
as part of an overall cut 
back from 24 to 20 participants.

Currently both Scottish and Italian teams qualify 
automatically.

An alternative distribution of revenues is also being demanded.

The English are said to be formulating alternatives including a a match against the Super 15 champions.

It is claimed a source close to the talks was reported to have told a Welsh newspaper: “They are getting shorter and shorter.

“There is complete deadlock and it doesn’t look good at the present moment.

“Will there be a Heineken Cup after next season? I 
honestly do not know.”
