Davis hails a Gers season to remember

STEVEN DAVIS admits that this season is one he will never forget after helping Rangers defy the odds to claim a second successive Clydesdale Bank Premier League title.

The Scottish champions finally got their hands on the trophy at Ibrox after being held to a 3-3 draw by Motherwell – a result which did little to dampen the party atmosphere.

The midfielder also enjoyed a successful campaign on a personal level after being named Scottish PFA player of the year by his fellow professionals.

"I set out at the start of the campaign looking to retain the title," he said.

"We've managed to do that and it's been a good season for me personally. I've picked up a couple of awards along the way which is always nice. It's a season I'll always remember.

"I think we'll look back in years to come and see this season as a really great achievement.

"There have been so many things stacked against us but we've stayed strong."

Six players – Kris Boyd, Nacho Novo, Kirk Broadfoot, DaMarcus Beasley, Steven Smith and David Weir are all out of contract and may have played their last game for Rangers.

Beasley indicated on his Twitter account yesterday he will leave Ibrox, while Boyd has said he will wait before making a decision. Boss Walter Smith has also yet to confirm whether he will return for another season and a crack at three-in-a-row.

Davis said: "Probably for the lads who could be leaving it's an emotional time.

"But no-one really knows what's going to happen. We're still a bit in the dark.

"I've said before, it would be great if we could keep the majority of players at the club. The team spirit is great and we'd like to keep everyone together.

"The manager is a key element in that. I think if he wasn't here it would be a totally different club.

"But the lads who are out of contract at the end of the month have shown a real determination. I think that's shone through.

"But whatever happens in the summer, I think the big thing is that we bring new players in.

"We haven't signed a player in a long time, which is something the manager's spoken about, so hopefully the club will get itself sorted out and we're able to do that."

Lucas Jutkiewicz's final act as a Motherwell player was to earn them a 3-3 draw when he converted from the penalty spot at Ibrox before returning to Everton after a successful loan spell. "It was quite emotional," he said.
