Davis Cup makes swift return to Scotland

Glasgow's Braehead Arena will host its second consecutive Davis Cup tie when Great Britain take on Hungary in September.

A sell-out crowd witnessed an Andy Murray-inspired GB team beat Luxembourg 4-1 earlier this month, and the success of the tie on and off the court persuaded the Lawn Tennis Association to head back to Scotland.

The winner of the contest, which takes place from 16-18 September, will earn promotion to Europe/Africa Zone Group I.

Murray's presence less than a week after the US Open final is far from guaranteed but the opportunity to compete on home soil again will be a big draw after his emotional performance against Luxembourg.

Glaswegian team captain Leon Smith said: "The fans at the Braehead Arena gave us such tremendous support for the win against Luxembourg, so it's a great way of saying thank you to them.

"We know Hungary will be tough to beat but, if we get a full house behind us again, there's no reason why we can't make it back up into Group I of the Davis Cup again."

Britain would be heavy favourites if world No 4 Murray played but nevertheless Hungary are a step up from Luxembourg.

They do not possess anyone of the calibre of Gilles Muller, who beat James Ward in straight sets in the opening rubber, but Attila Balazs and Adam Kellner are ranked in the world's top 250 while Marton Fucsovics is a former Wimbledon junior champion. If Britain were to win and secure promotion, they would put behind them one of the most embarrassing periods in the team's history, which reached its nadir with defeat by Lithuania last March.

Scotland's First Minister Alex Salmond said: "I hope getting a second chance to see another round of Davis Cup action might inspire some young Scots to pick up a tennis racket."
