Danny Galbraith buoyed by memories

DANNY GALBRAITH'S winning goal against Celtic has been the highlight of his Hibs career so far – but the young midfielder is hoping he gets a chance to add more strikes like just like it.

The former Manchester United kid stepped off the bench with half an hour remaining the last time the two sides clashed at Parkhead in January and went on to net a last-minute winner. However, he found himself back on the bench just a few days later and watched from the dug-out as the Easter Road side racked up a 2-1 victory over St Mirren.

Galbraith, who joined the club last summer, has made 16 appearance for the Easter Road side this season and conceded that the time he has spent on the bench has been a source of frustration.

But he's determined to grab his opportunity when it comes his way again and said: "The goal that night was without a doubt the highlight of my season so far – not just for the fact that I scored but because it was probably one of the longest periods of time that I have been out on the pitch in any one game.

"I got just about half an hour and I felt that gave me a chance to get into the game and to find my feet. It's a lot harder when you are only on for ten minutes or so because, just as you are getting into your stride, the final whistle has gone.

"I felt that my overall performance was really quite good. To score a goal right at the end really capped it all of for me and I would be lying if I said didn't hope I would get a chance to push on after that and be involved in the next game.

"Unfortunately, that didn't happen but I have just kept my head down and tried to keep working hard.

"When results have not really been going your way, you always hope you might be one of the changes that will be made but you've just got to be patient and keep your spirits up in training every day.

"When the chance does come along then you've got to be ready to take it again."

The 20-year-old is hoping manager John Hughes will give him the nod for tomorrow's lunchtime trip to Glasgow to face Celts, with Liam Miller serving a one-match suspension.

But he knows he may have to be patient for a little while longer and commented: "I hope every week I will be involved and this week is no different. You've just got to wait and see what happens when the team is named. If I'm not hopeful then there's really not much else, is there?

"I am quite hard on myself and I'm probably my worst critic. A lot of people have stressed to me that I am still just a young boy but I hate to use that as an excuse because I want to be playing.

"To me, it doesn't really matter what age I am. I might be one of the youngest in the squad but that doesn't make me any less hungry to be involved and to be out there on the pitch.

"Hopefully, I have still got a big contribution to make between now and the end of the season.

"There are a lot of players who can fill in for Liam in the middle and I am sure that whoever comes in to fill the gap will step up to the plate. Liam has been a great signing for us this season, you can tell that he has played at the very highest level." Despite his limited appearances in the starting line-up, Galbraith has been satisfied with the contribution that he has been able to make to his side.

Whilst disappointed to have spent so much time on the sidelines, he added: "The fact that I have done quite well when I have been brought on as a sub makes it slightly easier, because then at least you feel as if you have contributed.

"By the same token, though, if you have contributed then you would hope that you might be able to play a bit more.

"It's a tough situation to be in and I'm not going to pretend that it has been easy but I just have to be patient. I work hard every day so I know that there's not a problem on that side of things and, if I do get a chance tomorrow, I will always try to make a positive impact on the team."

No matter who makes it into the starting line-up against Neil Lennon's side, Galbraith knows Hibs face a tough task to repeat their January victory.

He knows that 2-1 reverse will still rile Celtic and their supporters and added: "Parkhead is a really hard place to go to but the fact that we managed to get a result there the last time is a massive thing.

"Maybe that will mean they'll be even more fired up for us this weekend. We are under no illusions, it will be a tough game and our form has not been brilliant recently.

"We've just got to go there with the same attitude as the last time, hopefully get that little bit of luck that we need, and come away with something again."

Rangers can win the title this weekend if Hibs take something from Parkhead and they record a victory over Hearts on Sunday, however, Galbraith insisted that he and his team-mates are only interested in getting the right result for themselves.

"We did them a favour the last time!" he laughed. "Seriously, though, we've got to look after ourselves, particularly because we haven't been getting the results that we maybe should have.

"We have to be 100 per cent concentrated on our own team and we need to get back to basics.

"All we're interested in is getting another three points on the board on Saturday and picking up as many as we possibly can over the next few weeks."
