Maxton is the second woman to coach a senior men’s first XV in Scotland. Two seasons ago, former international Ally Ratcliffe took charge of Langholm and is still involved at the Borders club as director of rugby.

Dalziel president Drew Moonie said: “We had a number of good candidates, but Jules was the most qualified and she struck us with her enthusiasm and desire to help the club move forward.”

Maxton was replaced as coach of the Scotland women’s team by Shade Munro, the former Glasgow Warriors coach. Her first competitive match in charge of the Motherwell club will be at home to Dumfries on 29 August.
