Daily Round-Up: New weekly radio show on Scottish golf

A new weekly radio show dedicated to golf, predominantly the Scottish scene, is going on air next week.

The Scottish Golf Radio Show, anchored by Alan Tait, will be available to listeners in a new podcast format from Tuesday through to the end of the golfing season.

A CSBS production for Scottish Golf and sponsored by Edinburgh-based Saltire Roofing, the 35-minute show will be available to download every Tuesday lunchtime.

It will bring golfers across the country a regular diet of the latest news, exclusive interviews, club features and competitions.

“I’m really looking forward to hosting the Scottish Golf Radio Show and giving golf fans something to tune into on a weekly basis,” said Tait, who is the director of golf at Marriott Dalmahoy.

“There are so many great things happening in the game and so much to talk about that we felt there was a huge gap in the market to air a radio show.

“I’m delighted that Scottish Golf and our sponsors Saltire Roofing are investing in the programme and I would encourage all golf fans to download the podcast and listen in.”

Ross Duncan, Scottish Golf’s marketing and commercial director, added: “We knew how popular the Golf Show was previously when it was aired on BBC Scotland and we didn’t want golf fans going without it, so we decided it would be a great platform for us to get involved with.

“With 220,000 club members in Scotland, we know there’s a big audience for golf out there. The podcast will give golfers the opportunity to take their clubhouse debates onto the show and interact with Alan and his guests, while giving exposure to the work in clubs that might not often get the recognition they deserve.”

Five Scots - Marc Warren, Scott Jamieson, Craig Lee, Andrew McArthur and Jamie McLeary - head out in tomorrow’s opening round of the Hero Indian Open at Delhi Golf Club. Home player Anirban Lahiri is the defending champion in a field that also includes three-time major winner Padraig Harrington, who last played in India as an amateur in 1992.

Lahiri won his second European Tour title in the space of three weeks last year after beating compatriot SSP Chawrasia in a play-off.

Lahiri, who had won the Malaysian Open a fortnight earlier, began the final round seven shots off the lead but a closing 69 was enough to force extra holes as overnight leader Chawrasia stumbled to a 76.

The home pair returned to the par-5 18th for the play-off and with Chawrasia unable to make par after hooking his tee shot into the trees, Lahiri holed from 10 feet for birdie.

Craig Lawrie followed in his father’s footsteps when the 20-year-old was crowned as the North-East Alliance champion.

With rounds of 66 and 64 at Inverallochy and Craibstone respectively, he claimed a title dad Paul won in both 1989 and 1991.

Lawrie Jnr pipped Murcar Links amateur Andrew Campbell (65-66) by a shot.

The Evian Championship, the only women’s golf major in Continental Europe, is introducing two new international qualifiers this year.

Following the creation of a similar event in France in 2014, qualifiers will now be held as well in the US and Korea.

A new event, Sharjah Senior Golf Masters, will be added to the European Senior Tour schedule next year and be held at Sharjah Golf and Shooting Club though to 2019.

The fifth current European Tour initiative in the United Arab Emirates, it will be held on the Peter Harradine-designed course from 16-18 March and carry a $450,000 prize fund.
