Cycling: Weather puts dampener on cycling event

Cyclists from around the country had their plans to compete in the Scottish Track Championships at Meadowbank dashed after organisers were forced to admit defeat to the weather.

Heavy rain on Friday and the prospect of more of the same over the rest of the weekend meant the two-day event was postponed.

A new date on the calendar will now be found, but there is a possibility that the rescheduled meeting could take place at the indoor Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome in Glasgow.

That track, which is being built for the 2014 Commonwealth Games, is scheduled to open in September. It will become Scotland’s premier cycling venue.

And, with City of Edinburgh Council showing no desire to have any suitable facility in the Capital, Meadowbank may have seen top level competition for the last time.
