Cycling: Trodden tramples on rivals with win in Billy Jones event

City of Edinburgh cyclist Phil Trodden posted the biggest win of his career when he took the honours in the prestigious Billy Jones Memorial Ten-Mile event at the Dudley Grand Prix yesterday.

Trodden was part of an 
intrepid group of Scottish riders who made the trip south 
despite the appalling weather.

Another in the group was Trodden’s team mate Kenny Ayre, who also made it a worthwhile journey when he won the sprint, which was the latest round of the British Cycling Sprinters’ League. The result leaves Ayre at the top of the overall standings. Among the others in action, Callum Watson was the busiest rider on show with two second places and a third.

Meanwhile, Callum Skinner ended his challenge at the European Under-23 Championships in Anadia, Portugal without a medal after another close call in yesterday’s closing session. The 19-year-old had featured in the Great Britain trio that took fourth place in the team sprint then bowed out at the quarter-final stage of the individual sprint.

Yesterday, he progressed through the heats and semi-finals of the Keirin but was again left empty-handed when he finished fourth behind Stefan 
Botticher of Germany.
