Cycling: Tester for Oliphant at Helensburgh

Capital cyclist Evan Oliphant will take a break from his European racing programme to contest the second round of the Scottish Power Renewables Super Six Series in Helensburgh tomorrow.

Riding for the West Lothian based Endura Racing Team, the current series champion kicked off his season's stage racing schedule in Italy last week and produced a solid effort. He will start as favourite to win the 71 mile contest tomorrow, although he faces a tough test against the cream of home-based talent. Also in the 80-strong field are Oliphant's colleagues from the Delhi Commonwealth Games, Ross Creber (Cycle Premier) James McCallum (Rapha Condor) and David Lines (Endura/Pedal Power Development Team).

Other contenders include teenager Robbie Hassan, a team mate of Lines who won the opening race at Gifford last month, and another youngster, Callum Wilkinson, Oliphant's colleague, who was also competing on the continent last week.

"Evan and Callum are pleased that the team's schedule allows them to race," said Endura official Martin Steele. "Both riders are heavily involved in Endura Racing's dual race programme. Evan has recently returned from the Settimana Internazionale Coppi e Bartali in Italy, while Callum has been in France for the Tour de Normandie."
