Cycling: Haston stays on track at top of Meadowbank league

Multiple British Masters medallist Louise Haston extended her fine cycling form to edge clear of her teenage rival Katie Archibald at the top of the women’s category after the latest round of the Meadowbank National Track League.

The duo started last night’s racing in joint first place but City of Edinburgh’s Haston edged out her Edinburgh Racers rival for second place in the scratch race for C category riders, Matthew Ball of West Lothian Clarion taking the honours.

And Haston, who returned from Newport with a five-medal haul, then won the 500 metres handicap final and Archibald was first in the Devil Take the Hindmost, leaving a single-point gap at the top of the table.

Two other riders who had earned British Masters medals also fared well in the men’s events, with league leader Bruce Croall extending his advantage by winning the 12-lap block handicap, sprint and 35-lap scratch, while Scott Macrae, a double medallist in Wales last weekend, won the Devil then finished runner-up in the scratch race to tighten his grip on second spot in the league ahead of Dave Martin, who produced four third-place finishes.
