Cycling: Gold-medallist Chris Hoy faces sweat over last Games spot

Sir CHRIS HOY faces an anxious wait to learn whether he will be offered the chance to defend all three of his Olympic titles in London this summer.

The 36-year-old Capital star turned on the style to power his way to victory in yesterday’s Keirin final at the World Track Championships in Melbourne – the 11th time Hoy has collected the world champion’s rainbow jersey.

His performance, in snatching victory ahead of Germany’s Max Levy and Britain’s Jason Kenny exemplified the Scot’s calmness under pressure and tactical nous.

“It’s the last meaningful race I’m going to have before the Olympic Games so it’s a great one to give me a confidence boost,” said a delighted Hoy.

However, the win came 24 hours after he had lost a domestic battle in the semi-final of the individual sprint against Kenny, who has presented team selectors with a headache as they decide who should earn the one available Olympic slot. Kenny eventually took silver behind Frenchman Gregory Bauge, while Hoy won the bronze medal ride-off against Australia’s Shane Perkins.

Hoy and Kenny will both feature in the team sprint in London, with the third position still up for grabs.
