Cycling: Agony for McCallum

CAPITAL cyclist James McCallum was today reflecting on an agonising loss at the British Criterium Championships in Yorkshire.

The Endura Racing team rider was in a four-man break that had built a substantial lead entering the final lap. Of that quartet, Tom Murray made an early effort but he was caught. Then a crash featuring Andy Tennant and Kristian House left McCallum well-placed as he powered clear.

However, as he hit the final cobbled section of the circuit, the bunch began to reel him in. He was caught on the line and had to settle for fifth place behind world track champion Ed Clancy (Motorpoint Marshals Pasta), with McCallum's colleague Ian Wilkinson taking silver and Jonny McEvoy (MMP) taking the bronze medal.

McCallum, who won the title three seasons ago, said: "I was in tears going down the back straight because I'd been so close and it has been so long since I have had a big result like that."
