Currie look to Simonson as they move to bolster squad

Currie have added depth to their squad with the signing of a New Zealand-raised front row as Scotland's rugby premiership begins to take shape.

Stuart Simonson, originally from Wellington, has arrived to cover hooker and prop via English side Sheffield Tigers and debuted from off the bench in the closing moments of Saturday's win over Boroughmuir.

Coach Ally Donaldson said: "With (Scotland under-20 cap) Alun Walker injured we are having to manage his 18-year-old replacement, Fergus Scott, as he breaks into senior rugby.

"In those circumstances it was particularly useful to see Stuart pitch up at our club.

"An electrician to trade, he was struggling to find work in Yorkshire and is hoping that some employment might be available in Edinburgh." Currie's bid to retain the title continues at West on Saturday but Donaldson is braced for losing wing sensation Tom Brown back to Edinburgh Rugby.

"Tom did exceptionally well for us against Boroughmuir so there is every chance we might lose him for this weekend but seeing players progress to the professional teams is what it's all about."

Meanwhile, Edinburgh could provide both Scotland scrum halves for the forthcoming Autumn Test series after it emerged that Rory Lawson is to undergo surgery on a broken hand and will be out of action for a month.

With Chris Cusiter also sidelined by injury the lead role is once again expected to be handed to Mike Blair who has made a timely return to form.
