Currie 48 - 23 Watsonians: Ally Donaldson allows himself the luxury of nit-picking after Currie's easy victory

CURRIE coach Ally Donaldson ticked off another win for his side before delivering a mixed assessment of their performance against league strugglers Watsonians.

"When we played well we were really good but we never played for anything approaching the full game," he admitted.

"We made mistakes and let them back into it. At times we were really showing flashes of real form but we just got a bit loose."

With five more league points in the kitty, however, Currie are now a step closer to a likely showdown for the silverware at home to Ayr on the final day of the season. By contrast, the picture is looking increasingly bleak for Watsonians.

The Myreside outfit were first to score when their teenage stand-off Jamie Forbes kicked a first-minute penalty but Currie responded with tries by Ross Weston, Chris Kinloch and Willie Moala, with Johnny Smith converting the first two.

Ali Rowe dotted down for the visitors and Forbes converted from wide on the left before adding a penalty to trim the deficit to six points at the break.

A magnificent long-range score by lock Ryan Wilson secured Currie's bonus point and, although Forbes clawed back three points with a drop goal, Smith, Weston and Moala added further tries.

Watsonians regained some measure of pride when Craig Sorbie touched down for them and Forbes converted before a Smith penalty completed the scoring. The away coach Bruce Aitchison knows that time is running out for his side to secure vital league points but he feels his players need to have greater belief if they are to rescue the situation and haul themselves away from the relegation zone.

He said: "When you meet a team as good as Currie with quality all the way through, you sometimes think you are up against it instead of going to meet them. We just sat back at times."
