Currie 38 - 6 Heriot’s: Below-par Currie show still good enough

Having watched his team brush aside Heriot’s despite a well below-par performance, Currie head coach Ally Donaldson said: “It is good to not play to our best and still come away with a bonus point.”

The scoreline masked the true story of the game, in which both sides struggled to build any attacking momentum.

Heriot’s looked uninspired throughout and were notably petulant at the breakdown, conceding penalties at a worrying rate. Home full-back Jamie Forbes dispatched four of these opportunities to hand his side the edge at the half-time break, also adding the conversion to the sole first half try, supplied by Cypriot international stand-off Andrew Binikos.

The Goldenacre men could only respond with two penalty efforts from captain Graham Wilson. Second-half tries from Mike Entwhistle, who appeared in support on the shoulder of Binikos after a clean break from the playmaker, Malcolm Peacock and Barry Mansfield, combined with two further Forbes conversions, gave a final score that flattered the hosts.

Donaldson was quick to point out the key area that his side needs to address.

“Our set piece wasn’t as good as normal and we just couldn’t get any rhythm into our play. But we still won 38-6 with a bonus point.”
