Currie 34 - 21 Aberdeen Grammar: Currie still on track for top-three finish

CURRIE maintained their challenge for a top-three finish with a workmanlike bonus-point win over a fast-improving Aberdeen side, writes Colin Renton.

The hosts had only a penalty by Jamie Forbes to show for their early domination and 23 minutes had elapsed before Finlay Gillies raced into contact and the recycled ball was moved wide to Alan Whittingham who touched down. Forbes added the conversion.

Aberdeen struck back when Callum Anderson skirted three defenders then flipped the ball inside to Murray Douglas, who plunged over for the score.

However, Andy MacMahon gathered and created the platform for Loma Kivalu to claim his first try for Currie. A penalty by Alex Hagart reduced the deficit to 15-8 at the break but Currie restarted with a try when Whittingham sent Dougie Fife in. Again Aberdeen rallied and Douglas raced in for a second time but the hosts secured the bonus point when the pack drove over and Gary Temple applied the final touch.

A drop goal and penalty by Hagart ensured there was no room to ease off for the hosts but a late converted try by Whittingham sealed the victory.
