Currie 17 - 17 Glasgow Hawks: It's back to the drawing board for late levellers Currie

It SEEMS that if you want to take a punt on a home draw in the Premiership then Currie is the safe bet. In round four of the Premiership the Malleny Park men made it two draws from two at home, after scoring an injury-time try to achieve parity with the, as yet, unbeaten Glasgow Hawks.

The hard truth, however, for the defending champions is that after four rounds they are still without a win. But that record has to be seen in the context of their opposition in the opening rounds - Melrose away, Dundee at home, Heriot's away and, on Saturday, Hawks at home - adding up to a testing four weekends for last season's champions.

"We could have won all four games. We lost to Melrose by three points and to Heriot's by four," reflected Ally Donaldson, the Currie coach.

The draw ended Hawks' winning sequence but it was the manner in which they threw away their lead that will cause some sober thinking ahead of this weekend's clash with Ayr. Hawks led 17-0 until just before the interval with tries from former Launceston centre Tom Preece and flanker-turned-winger, Joffy White, both converted by Mike Adamson who also landed a penalty goal.

A try on half-time by Ross Weston and the conversion by Johnny Smith, and then an 80th minute penalty goal by Richard Snedden, narrowed Hawks' lead to just seven points going into injury time at the end of the game.

All it needed for Hawks was to hold on to the ball. Simple in theory but, in practice, it went badly wrong in the seventh minute of injury time with a bungled line-out in Currie's 22, allowing the Malleny Park side to launch a bold attack from deep that ended with a try for Tom Brown, Snedden's conversion levelling the scores.
