Curling: Muirhead’s rink suffers second loss

Eve Muirhead’s Scottish women suffered their second round-robin loss of the Ford Women’s World Curling Championships in Lethbridge, Canada yesterday when they went down by 2-7 to Korea.

Earlier they had come from behind to beat Denmark 8-6, sealing their win with a score of four in the ninth end, but there was to be no comeback against Korea.

The Koreans raced into a 4-0 lead after five ends before Muirhead drew for one shot at the sixth. A brief revival followed in the seventh when Scotland stole one, but Korea re-established their lead in the eighth with a score of two. And when Muirhead gave up a steal of one at the ninth, the Scots conceded.

Against Denmark, the Scots opened with a three in the first end before letting the Danes score in each of the next four ends for a 4-3 lead. In the ninth, Muirhead produced a triple take-out with her first effort and was then able to draw for four and the win. After the loss to Korea, Muirhead said: “That was a poor performance but they played great. We’re going to have to step it up big-time but it’s in our hands. We can’t panic.”

The Scots face USA next.
