Saltires YB40: Cheer as Calvin Burnett hits roof

SCOTLAND ended their final YB40 campaign without a win after Lancashire eased to victory at a damp and murky Titwood last night.

After the Saltires had limped to a disappointing 145 all out, the county were set a revised target of 125 from 28 overs in a rain-affected encounter.

Calvin Burnett dismissed Stephen Moore to raise hopes of a Saltires fightback. However, Tom Smith and Ashwell Prince kept the county ahead.

Prince, deceived by Majid Haq, chipped-up a catch to Burnett but his 36, including four boundaries and a six, had put the visitors in charge. Simon Katich also fell to Gordon Goudie as the Saltires went down fighting but Smith finished unbeaten on 42 as Lancashire eased home with seven wickets and 28 balls to spare.

Freddie Coleman’s concentration appeared to be impaired three deliveries after the second break when a ball from Kabir Ali got through his defences and clipped the top of middle stump.

Hamish Gardiner, having registered a couple of streaky boundaries, was not so lucky when the next edge found Tom Smith at slip as Chapple reduced the Saltires to 29-2.

The Saltires at one stage limped along for 141 deliveries without crossing the rope. That spell was broken by Mommsen but by then Berrington had departed for a top score of 35 and been joined in the pavilion by Moneeb Iqbal, Matt Cross and Majid Haq who all went cheaply.

It was only the hitting of Burnett that brought cheer to the home supporters, the Arbroath all-rounder clouting four boundaries and a massive six onto the dressing room roof. Ali claimed revenge for being struck for three consecutive fours by bowling Burnett for 25.

He had faced just seventeen balls while Mommsen was unbeaten on 31 having faced fifty deliveries.
