Cricket umpire Martin Flynn dies aged 82

Tributes have been paid to long-serving East cricket umpire and official, Martin Flynn, who has died, aged 82.

East Umpires Association secretary Sandy Scotland said of the former Carlton cricket club secretary: “Martin was umpiring even before our Association was formed in 1971 and will be sadly missed not least because of his willingness to undertake the mundane jobs others might be tempted to walk away from.”

A former maths lecturer at Napier University, Martin, who also had a long association with the Holy Cross club, was heavily involved in organising student cricket in Scotland right up until his death.

Scotland bowler Ally Evans, formerly of Carlton and now with Derbyshire, said: “A very sad day for Scottish cricket, a tremendous servant for the game and for Carlton.”

From Grange, another Scotland cap, Stuart Davidson, said: “We shared many LBW debates over the years! A true servant to Carlton and cricket” while ex-Scotland captain Craig Wright described Mr Flynn as “the type of guy cricket can’t do without”.

A funeral service will be held on April 25 at Warriston Crematorium at 11am.
