Cricket: Preston Mommsen to skipper Saltires at Glamorgan

GORDON Drummond has been forced out of Saltires’ Clydesdale Bank 40 clash with Glamorgan tomorrow.

The skipper, who led the side to an historic T20 win over Bangladesh on Tuesday, is unable to travel to Cardiff due to work commitments.

South African-born Preston Mommsen, who captained the team for the first time against Somerset a fortnight ago, will again take the reins.

Coach Pete Steindl said: “It’s frustrating for Drummo but it allows us to give Preston some more experience of captaining the team.

“He did well in his first game and we believe he has some
really good attributes for the role – he is a leader.”

Stoneywood-Dyce all-rounder Jan Stander, another South African by birth, also misses tomorrow’s clash through work commitments.

Watsonians batsman Ewan Chalmers has been drafted into the squad along with Clydesdale pace bowler Safy Sharif, who
returns for the first time since sustaining a rib injury in March.

Calvin Burnett, the young
Arbroath all-rounder, could also make his first appearance of the season.

Steindl added: “For us the Clydesdale Bank 40 competition is viewed as an opportunity to look at players who are not
yet fully established in the side. That is what we plan to do during the last few games of the campaign but we feel it is important to build on the momentum we gained from beating Bangladesh. We will concentrate on the quality of our performance.”

The Saltires are bidding to end a sequence of five straight defeats to county opposition.
