Cricket: Carlton seconds lose to give Glenrothes the East One title

All season the Grange Loan men have managed to keep on the coat tails of the men from Fife, but at the weekend their loss to Marchmont on the final day, coupled with Glenrothes’ rain-affected match at Largo, meant they had to settle for  second place.

At Cavalry Park, in a match reduced to 35-overs-a-side, Carlton II posted 135-7 batting first with Charles Legget top scoring with 59 not out. In reply Kiwi Matt Loeffen hit a brilliant 61 not out as the home side chased down their victory for the loss of five wickets. The win does not look like it will be enough to save Marchmont from the drop though, with them set to go down to East Two with Largo and, possibly, Grange II.

At Largo, Glenrothes batted first and Greig Hopcroft scored 104 not out as the visitors  posted 192-4.

Soon after, the hosts started their reply the rain came to East Drive and the match was called off.

That left Glenrothes to celebrate the title, although, because of such a wet summer, they only completed six of a possible 19 league matches.

Like the teams possibly  going down, they now await their fate, with a play-off match to be played in the coming weeks to see if they can possibly move up to the national leagues.

The three other matches in East One on Saturday were called off.

It was a similar story in East Two with most matches falling foul of the weather.

St Boswells had already been crowned champions and will be playing in the top flight in 2013 with Edinburgh and, possibly, Edinburgh South joining them in making the step up.
