Cricket: Weston's 113 leads Sonians to victory

WATSONIANS captain Steve Paige hailed the way Tim Weston paced his innings on Saturday after the New Zealander led the Capital outfit to a five-wicket win over Clydesdale in the SNCL Premier Division.

Chasing Clydesdale's 231-8 at a sun-kissed Myreside, 'Sonians were in trouble early when they lost both openers James Easton and Ryan Flannigan for ducks to the bowling of Greig Williamson.

However, pro Weston came in and settled things down and went on to make his first major contribution of the summer. He was still there at the end on 113 not out as the hosts reached their victory target with five balls remaining.

Paige said: "I am really pleased for Tim that he got a big score and that he managed to see the game out for us. He batted beautifully and we look forward to seeing more of that in the coming weeks.

"I thought the team really dug in well because at one point Clydesdale looked set for a bigger total until Ross Paxton and Craig Wright slowed them up."

Watsonians are now fifth in the table ahead of a trip to Greenock this weekend.

Elsewhere, Carlton's batsmen were in the runs again as they saw off McCrea FS West at Hamilton Crescent. Skipper Fraser Watts scored 77, while his deputy Steve Gilmour made 60 not out as they posted 304-5. The hosts made a good fist of the run chase, but came up 14 runs short to leave Carlton sixth.

Grange are still top after they chased down Greenock's 214-5 to win by six wickets at Glenpark.

Gregor Maiden agonisingly missed out on a century, posting 99 not out, as the men from Stockbridge made it five wins from five.

Young Kiwi Matthew Thomas now has 16 wickets from just four league and cup matches in Scotland after his 4-9 helped Heriot's stay joint top of the First Division.

Batting first, Heriot's made only 45 all out at Stenhousemuir, but spinner Thomas helped ensure that the hosts were skittled out for just 103. Penicuik are still winless after a home loss to Poloc.

Captain Greg Bissett hit 53 not out as SMRH defeated West Lothian by eight-wickets at Inverleith in the Second Division. Earlier, spinner Richard Hannam had taken 3-17 as the visitors were all out for 130.

Edinburgh and RH Corstorphine both lost though, going down to Dumfries and Freuchie respectively.
