Cricket: Stalwart Bryn Lockie calls it a day at top level

CARLTON internationalist Bryn Lockie has retired from senior cricket after a career that yielded 37 Scotland caps and 3897 league runs.

Announcing his decision Lockie, a PE teacher at Stewart's Melville College, said: "After playing first-team cricket over four generations, sadly, it is time to call it a day at this level. Over the years I have witnessed the club change dramatically, not only in the new pavilion, but more importantly in the depth of talent that is now coming through."

Fraser Watts, current Carlton captain and an international colleague, said: "I was lucky enough to open the batting with Bryn for Carlton and Scotland. He helped me immensely.

"He was a superb batsman for Scotland, undoubtedly one of the best back foot players we've produced. It is typical that the main reason for stepping down is that he didn't want to take the place of a younger player. We're delighted he intends to continue playing in the second team."
