Cricket: Spry shines on debut as Carlton II win

SIMON SPRY took four wickets on his debut as Carlton II got off to a winning start in East League Division One on Saturday.

They secured an away win at Grange II, Division Two champions in 2009, thanks to some tight bowling on an overcast Capital afternoon.

Batting first the hosts struggled with the ever reliable Stevie Elder taking 4-20 and Australian Spry 4-28 as Grange II only made it up to 159 all out from their allotted overs at Raeburn Place. Opener Kenny Rae top-scored with 48 for Grange II.

In reply Carlton II were in a bit of trouble with Ben Duerden and Spry back in the pavilion at 21-2, but Ani Majumdar and Craig Marshall then put on a good partnership hitting 72 and 48 as their side eventually won by five wickets.

Elsewhere in the top flight reigning champions Fauldhouse saw their match with Boroughmuir rained off while Holy Cross secured a home win over Watsonians II.

Musselburgh started life in Division Two well, defeating Marchmont by five wickets.
