Cricket: Parks final makes history

Cricket history is set to be made when the final of the venerable Parks Trophy takes place between Standard Life and Leith FAB at Newfield tonight.

Leith have never won the trophy, which was first contested in 1891, while bowler Ian Wallace on the Standard Life side will be attempting to become the only player in that club to have appeared in four winning teams — 1995, 1998, 1999 and 2007 — following a decision by Richard Donald to step down.

Standard Life will have to contend with the absence of star performer Rob Thornton, who hit scores of 97 and 52 in earlier ties against Currie & Balerno and Holy Cross.

However, prolific run-makers Chris Goddard (Heriot's) and David Sangster (Kirkbrae) are in the line-up.

Leith enjoyed a halcyon year in 2008 when they reached both the finals of the Parks and Terry Newcombe Trophies.

Skippered by Tam Heinitz, they take heart from beating Standard Life on the way through in both competitions.
