Cricket: It's make or break for East Women

EAST of Scotland tennis women were today facing a crunch tie in their bid for promotion from group five of the AEGON inter-county summer cup.

A 6-3 success against Hereford and Worcester put the women on a collision course with similarly unbeaten Northumberland at Havant.

However, the men's side are facing an uphill battle for survival in group two after a 1-8 defeat by Norfolk left them pointless going into a clash with unbeaten Yorkshire.

Heroes for the women were Mhairi Brown and Aileen Davis who dropped just eight games in winning all three rubbers. The previous day Brown had been in equally impressive form conceding just six games overall when partnering Sarah Mcfadyen.

Liana Park and Mcfadyen contributed two wins while there was success for Scotland women's cricket internationalist Leigh Kasperek when partnering Sonia Vickers in their opening tie.

The only winners for the men were Graeme Dyce and Alan Macdonald but to their frustration the East saw four ties surrendered in a third set.

Included for East was Johnny Barr alongside Steve McGuckian while Sam McNeill partnered James McKie. That left Euan McIntosh on the sidelines, alongside skipper Ross Murdoch, awaiting a debut.
