Cricket: Drummond survives late scare as Scotland beat Netherlands

SCOTLAND cricket captain Gordon Drummond survived a dropped catch off the second last ball of the match as his 33 not out steered his side to an amazing one-wicket win over the Netherlands in their ICC World Cricket League opener in Amstelveen.

The Scots will head into tomorrow's match at the same venue against Canada on a high after they chased down 235 to win against the hosts who looked as though they had the game in the bag.

Needing three to win off the last two balls of the match, Carlton all-rounder Drummond skied one up in the air, but Tom De Grooth dropped it and Scotland managed to get one run.

Then off what was supposed to be the last ball, Mark Jonkman bowled a wide to Carlton's Ross Lyons and it somehow went by the wicketkeeper allowing Scotland to get the two runs required and leave Scotland's players jubilant.

The hosts won the toss and decided to bat, but it did not look like the best decision after only eight balls when Eric Scwarczynski edged one to McCallum at slip off the bowling of young Matthew Parker.

Tom de Grooth and Tom Cooper then put on a 58-run partnership before the former was out for 21. That brought South African-born ODI debutant Wesley Barresi to the crease and he played second fiddle in an 81-run partnership with Cooper which helped move them on to 152 in the 40th over.

At that point Barresi was bowled by Drummond, who ended up with superb figures of 2-27 from his ten overs, before the hosts' batsmen freed up and began to score with more ease.

They added 80 in the last ten overs to get them up to a good total of 234-6. The experienced Bas Zuiderent was the main man with 55 from just 35 balls, while Cooper eventually made the top score of 87. Carlton's Preston Mommsen and Grange teenager Oli Hairs opened the Scotland innings and although the former went early, Hairs was looking good with 23 off 35 balls.

However, by the time he went Scotland were 42-3 and when that became 121-6 in the 30th over the odds looked against the visitors. Monneb Iqbal's 63 and Parker's 22 gave Scotland a chance before Drummond led his side to an unlikely win.
