Cricket - Division 2 round-up: Final ball drama at Meikleriggs sees Meier catch secure tie

THERE may not have been a great deal at stake at Meikleriggs on Saturday, but in terms of dramatic climaxes the tussle between Ferguslie and RH Corstorphine was up there with the best of the season.

Going into the last over, the hosts needed nine to win with two wickets in hand. Despite losing Martin McAllister for a breezy 12, they reached the final ball with the scores level and skipper Stuart Kennedy and Duncan Patterson in the middle.

It appeared to be Patterson's moment of glory as he connected well, only for Corstorphine's Kevin Meier to cling on to a marvellous catch.

After the thrilling tie, Kennedy said: "It was all a bit frantic out there. We had been behind the rate for much of the innings but Martin's 12 from seven deliveries had given us hope.

"Perhaps things would have been different had I not faced only three balls in the last four overs."

Kennedy also paid tribute to the efforts of visiting pro Mo Ramzan, whose unbeaten 118 had paved the way for Corstorphine to post a tally of 225 for seven.

He said of the pro: "His batting was excellent. Corstorphine had a few guys missing and he obviously set out his stall to stay at the crease for the entire 50 overs."

At Whitehaugh, Kelburne boosted their survival chances by snuffing out the challenge of Weirs, who slid to the basement as a result. David Harper and Scott Hamilton shared seven wickets.

Newly-crowned champs Dumfries whacked West Lothian, thanks mainly to 81 by Josh Geary.

Renfrew's hammering at the hands of Freuchie means that Ferguslie will finish in the runners-up slot.

Veteran Scott Gourlay emerged as the Fifers' hero at Muir Road, snapping up four for 21 as Renfrew crashed to 99 all out in their response to 170.

Robin Crouch produced a stunning bowling display for SMRH against Imans Edinburgh at Inverleith.

He took four for nine to send them crashing to a meagre 66 all out, but racking up the runs required for victory proved less than plain sailing for SMRH, who limped to victory by only two wickets.
