Having his third start of the week, Michael Wigham's charge came up the far side under Jim Crowley to collar Steele Tango in the final few yards. The 14-1 shot prevailed by three-quarters of a length with Pires finishing fast to take third, another half a length adrift.

The bumper field inevitably split into two groups with the hot favourite Nationalism forced to race down the unfavoured stands side after being drawn low.

That group were always toiling in the wake of the far side pack, however, with Camerooney taking them along before Taqleed made his challenge. They were quickly swallowed up as Crowley weaved his way through on Credit Swap to deliver a decisive thrust and deny the game Steele Tango. Pires kept on for third while Sandor was fourth and Nationalism finished unplaced.

Crowley said: "He's a star, he's been unlucky the last two times, but everything went like clockwork for him. It's a great spare to pick up. I was going to go to Epsom, but switched here at declaration time."

Wigham explained: "Basically we train him for this time of year. When we looked at the start of the week we thought the ground would be too deep as he doesn't get a mile and a quarter, so he ran on Thursday over a mile.

"He was unlucky again so when the rain didn't come we thought we might as well take our chance. He's got a big heart." Cheveley Park Stud already look to have a strong hand in next year's Classics after Fury laid down his marker with a convincing display in the 500,000 Tattersalls Millions 2YO Trophy.

Hot on the heels of Hooray's Cheveley Park Stakes success for the owners 24 hours earlier, Fury made short work of a classy field under a perfectly-judged Kieren Fallon ride.

The striking grey drew plenty of late support for the seven-furlong heat and justified that faith with a length-and-three-quarters victory as the 11-2 joint-favourite.
