Craig Chalmers wins second chance after SRU inquest

CRAIG Chalmers has been allowed to keep his post as coach of the Scotland under-20s team but has been warned by the Scottish Rugby Union a repeat of the conduct which saw him arrested after the Melrose Sevens last month will not be tolerated.

The SRU held an investigation after the 41-year-old former Scotland and British and Irish Lions fly-half was taken into custody late on Saturday, 10 April following an incident when he was refused entry to a social function near the Melrose club. Chalmers spent a night in police cells in Hawick and was given an on-the-spot 40 fine for committing a breach of the peace through verbal abuse.

The SRU announced the conclusion of its deliberations yesterday, and while Chalmers' abilities as a coach have been acknowledged, his rugby talent will not be enough to keep him in his post if he fails in his duty as a role model again.

An SRU spokesman said: "We view Craig as a coach of considerable potential, however with the honour of coaching a representative team comes great responsibility and scrutiny. Craig recognises that as a sporting ambassador of the game and a mentor to promising young players he has a vital role to play in promoting the sport.

"Having investigated this matter thoroughly and having considered a number of options, specifically in reference to Craig's future as Scotland under-20 backs coach, we have concluded that while Craig will remain in place as Scotland under-20 coach we will monitor his on and off-field conduct.

Chalmers said: "I would like to reiterate my apology for the embarrassment caused to those around me and to the game of rugby and would like to thank (the SRU] for their faith in me.

"Today's announcement represents a crossroads in my coaching career and I plan to seize this opportunity to demonstrate my commitment to the Scotland under-20 team and improving my on and off-field conduct."
