Craig Chalmers in double trouble after second incident at Sevens

CRAIG Chalmers has been asked to appear at a disciplinary hearing at Murrayfield next Wednesday following an alleged incident involving a match official at the Melrose Sevens last Saturday.

The incident is not related to the one which led to Chalmers, pictured, being arrested later that night and which is already the subject of a Scottish Rugby Union inquiry, but the latest development could spell bad news for the Melrose and Scotland Under-20 coach.

He was fined 60 and spent the night in police cells following a dispute outside a party. That incident took place late on Saturday, whereas the one which next week's hearing will deal with took place earlier in the day.

Melrose centre Jamie Murray has also been asked to attend the hearing, which will seek to determine if either man breached Rules 13.3.2 and 13.3.8 of the SRU disciplinary procedures. Rule 13.3.2 refers to "acting in an abusive, insulting, intimidating or offensive manner towards any person, referees, assistant referees or other officials or any other person otherwise in attendance at the match as spectators or in any other capacity". Rule 13.3.8 refers to "any breach of the Code of Conduct".

Chalmers reacted furiously after his team were denied a last-minute try in their quarter final against guest side Hamilton.

The SRU said on Monday that it will investigate the incident which led to Chalmers' arrest, adding: "Scottish Rugby expects all its sporting ambassadors to hold the ethos and values of the sport in the highest regard." Chalmers apologised for "any embarrassment" he had caused, and acknowledged his actions had been "unacceptable". A statement from Melrose said their coach had been told that "any repeat of such an incident would be unacceptable".
