Craig Bellamy arrested on suspicion of assault

FORMER Celtic striker Craig Bellamy has been arrested on suspicion of assault.

The Manchester City player was taken into custody after two men were injured in an early morning incident in Cardiff. The 31-year-old, who is currently on loan at npower Championship side Cardiff, was bailed yesterday after speaking with officers.

He was arrested after the alleged assault on Caroline Street - informally known as "Chippy Lane" - at around 2.45am on Sunday. The men, aged 20 and 26, sustained facial injuries.

A South Wales Police spokesman said: "A 31-year-old man has today been arrested on suspicion of assault and has been bailed pending further inquiries."

The police were unable to confirm the date Bellamy was bailed until. A Cardiff City spokesman said: "We are aware of the reported incident involving one of our players last weekend and feel it would be inappropriate to comment while an ongoing police investigation is under way."

Meanwhile, Bellamy's Manchester City team-mate, Wayne Bridge, has joined West Ham on loan until the end of the season.

The 30-year-old has dropped down the pecking order at Eastlands since the arrival of Aleksandar Kolarov and Jerome Boateng in the summer.

"It will be great to play a part in helping keep West Ham in the Premier League," said Bridge. "It would be a big achievement."

Bridge watched on from the stands at Upton Park on Tuesday night when manager Avram Grant was forced to switch Matthew Upson to left-back as the Hammers beat Birmingham 2-1 in the first leg of their Carling Cup semi-final. It has been a problem position in a difficult season for the Irons, which has seen them struggle in the Barclays Premier League, despite their cup success. They sit bottom of the table following a 5-0 drubbing by Newcastle last time out.

In another loan move, Birmingham have signed David Bentley from Tottenham until the end of the season.

The former Blackburn and Arsenal midfielder joined Spurs in July 2008 for a fee of 15million, but has struggled to make an impact at White Hart Lane.

The 26-year-old underwent a medical at St Andrew's earlier this week and has now completed a deal to join Alex McLeish's side.
