Cornish Pirates 54 - 31 Currie: Pirates show swashbuckling form to loot all the points

Currie battled hard before losing out to the Cornish Pirates in a British & Irish Cup cracker in Penzance yesterday.

The home side got off to a quick start and they were soon 7-0 up. The opening try came in the 6th minute when Wes Davis went over with Rob Cook on hand to convert.

Currie got their first points on the board two minutes later after good forward play won a penalty which Hayden Abercrombie converted.

Cook and Abercrombie then swapped penalties but, straight after the latter, the hosts added their second try. It came from hooker Rob Elloway after good work by Rhodri McAtee. Abercrombie's third penalty made it 15-9 before Matt Hopper got the home side's third try of the first half.

Currie kept fighting though and, in the 37th minute, Ryan Wilson just managed to touch down for a try after strong forward play. Cook then kicked his third penalty making it 23-14 at half-time.

The second half started at a whirlwind pace with three tries in five minutes. Two of them came from the Pirates winger McAtee with a Currie try by youngster Matt Scott in between to leave things at 35-21.

Abercrombie's fourth penalty in the 51st minute was followed by a spell of Currie pressure, but it was replacement Jonny Bentley who added the Pirates' sixth try in the 65th minute. In the last 15 minutes Tom Brown went over for Currie to give them a four-try bonus point before the English holders clinched the victory with two late tries.
