Contador edges title rival in Alpine road race

SPAIN'S Alberto Contador won the sixth stage of the Criterium du Dauphiné Liberé after beating race leader Janez Brajkovic in a two-man sprint yesterday.

Contador launched several attacks in the final ascent to L'Alpe D'Huez but Brajkovic responded to them all.

With a strong head wind in the final stretch, Contador stayed on Brajkovic's wheel and overtook the team RadioShack rider in the last 50 metres. Brajkovic retained the overall lead, with Contador up to second.

Contador returned to competition at the Criterium after racing for the last time in April.
