The 21-year-old, who won gold in the all-around final 24 hours earlier, as well as in the team final before that, pushed Scott Morgan, of Canada, into the silver-medal position. David Bishop, of New Zealand, won bronze.

Scotland’s Dan Keatings, who had high hopes of adding to the two silvers he has already secured at Glasgow 2012, had to settle for fourth place. A red flag, after he stepped outside the floor, cost him dearly.

Keatings has another realistic medal chance in the pommel horse, but all eyes are now on Whitlock. The Englishman has two more finals to contest, in the pommel and the rings. Were he to win gold in both, he would take his tally for the week to five.
