About 50,000 of the cuddly toys have been sold since the Glasgow 2014 official merchandise first went on sale, and the 15cm and 25cm versions have now all gone.

The one-metre version was still available on the Glasgow 2014 merchandise website.

A Glasgow 2014 spokeswoman said: “We always knew Clyde was going to be popular, but it’s just been incredible – they have been flying off the shelves.”

The schoolgirl who designed Clyde has said it is “amazing” to see how successful it has been.

Beth Gilmour was 12 when she sketched the green thistle-man with purple hair.

Now 14, she said: “I love seeing the reaction from people. When I’ve been out and about and seen Clyde in Glasgow, and seen people running up to get pictures, it’s nice to see and I’m quite proud of it.”
