1965: Born 20 January in Stranraer.

1982: Begins professional career as a central defender at Mansfield Town, making more than 100 appearances.

1985: Recruuited by Swindon, then managed by Lou Macari, and captains the team to the Fourth Division championship in his first season.

1993: Signs for Tottenham in a seven-figure transfer and remains at White Hart Lane until 1999.

1995: Makes the first of 36 appearances for the Scotland national team in a goalless draw against Russia in a European Championship qualifier.

1996: Is a member of Scotland's Euro 96 squad in England, playing in all three group games.

1998: Part of the last Scotland squad to reach a major championships at the World Cup in France. Plays in the first two group games.

2000: Joins Nottingham Forest after a brief spell at Aston Villa but suffers a broken leg, curtailing his career.

2001: Retires from playing after a short loan spell at Notts County.

2003: Begins management career with Northampton, leading them to promotion in 2006.

2006: Replaces Gary Megson as manager of Nottingham Forest, before parting company with the club in December 2008.

2009: Interviewed for Hibernian vacancy, but loses out on post to John Hughes.

2009: Joins Newcastle as first-team coach, before becoming assistant manager and helping the club win promotion back to the Barclays Premier League.

2010: October - Appointed manager of Hibernian.
